‘In my 40 years on the bench, I never favoured any party.’ – Bulkachuwa, Justice

Zainab Bulkachuwa, a former president of the Court of Appeal, stated that in her 40 years of judicial service, she never favoured any party.

The retired judge emphasised that she never jeopardised her position on partisan grounds.

Bulkachuwa was responding to remarks made by her husband, Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa.

Remember that Adamu Bulkachuwa said during the 9th Senate valedictory session on June 10 that he frequently encroached on his wife’s space while she was in office.

“And she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues,” the former senator said.

Adamu Bulkachuwa’s remarks sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians demanding that his claim be investigated.

However, in an interview with BBC Hausa, Adamu Bulkachuwa retracted his statement, claiming that the then-senate president, Ahmad Lawan, did not allow him to finish his thoughts.

According to him, the assistance he (Adamu Bulkachuwa) mentioned was not negative.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued on Sunday in response to her husband’s claim, retired judge Zainab Bulkachuwa stated that in her 40 years of service, she never compromised her oath of office.

According to the retired judge, her decisions were always based on facts.

“My attention has been drawn to the trending video of what my husband Senator Adamu M. Bulkachuwa said,” she said.

“I want to state unequivocally that throughout my judicial career spanning 40 years of service to my country, I never compromised my oath of office to favour any party who appeared before me.”

“My decisions were always based on facts, the law, and my conscience and oath of office.”

Former “justices of the court can attest to the fact that I never interfered with the independence of any of the justices of the court in the discharge of their judicial functions,” according to Zainab Bulkachuwa.
